Khaberni - Eight skiers were killed in an avalanche that struck the mountains of California state, according to local authorities, in a tragic incident that shook the region.
The New York Times reported, quoting Nevada County police, that eight out of nine skiers who had been missing after the avalanche were found dead, while one person is still missing and believed to be dead.
It was clarified that the group engulfed by the avalanche consisted of 15 people.
About six hours after the incident, rescue teams reached six survivors, and initially found the bodies of three members of the group, before later discovering five more bodies in the vicinity of the area.
During a press conference, emergency officials noted that severe weather conditions and difficult terrain were hindering the body recovery operations, complicating search and rescue efforts.
Initial reports had spoken of a larger group of skiers and a higher number of missing, before the authorities clarified the final numbers as combing operations progressed at the incident site.
