Spanish MPs Reject Ban on Niqab and Burqa

Khaberni - The Spanish House of Representatives voted against the bill introduced by the right-wing concerning the ban on wearing the niqab and burqa in public places in Spain.
The far-right "Vox" party presented the bill during the general session of the Council on Tuesday, concerning the "protection of women's dignity and public security" which included a ban on wearing the niqab and burqa in public places.
The bill only received support from the conservative Popular Party and the Union of the Navarrese People, while the Canary Coalition abstained from voting, and the ruling Socialist Workers' Party and its allies voted against the bill.
During the debates, left-wing MPs from the Socialist Workers' Party and allies accused the "Vox" party of "spreading hatred", arguing that the bill "would not help women".

In turn, the right-wingers insisted on the necessity of "preserving the identity of Spanish society", also pointing out that Spain "cannot allow the influx of more migrants" who "do not respect cultural and social rules", according to them.

It is worth noting that several European countries have banned the wearing of clothing that completely covers the face, such as the niqab and burqa, in public places, including France, Belgium, the Netherlands, Austria, Denmark, Switzerland, and Bulgaria.

There are also restrictions or partial bans on wearing the niqab and burqa in some other countries, including Norway, Germany, Spain, Italy, and others.
