Khaberni - The General Director of the Land Transport Regulatory Authority, Riyad Al-Kharabsheh, confirmed that the Authority continues its diligent work to achieve the desired goals, highlighting that in the year 2025, the Authority has made tangible developments in the public transport system in the kingdom, especially in the area of regular passenger transport.
Al-Kharabsheh spoke in a press release about the Authority's efforts to expand services from Amman to the governorates, through the regular transport project between Amman and the governorates' centers, to include lines connecting the capital with the governorates of Jerash, Irbid, and Al Karak, stating that this project features electronic payment, television monitoring, electronic tracking, and clear timetables.
Al-Kharabsheh added: "The second phase of the project was approved with the addition of 180 buses, in preparation for completing the system between the governorates' centers and Amman, within a plan targeting the introduction of one thousand buses as part of the regular transport program out of more than 5500 buses in the kingdom, accompanied by regulatory and operational decisions, including fuel support, sector restructuring, and the stabilization of permits for 10 years, and enhancing the lines according to a clear mechanism."
Al-Kharabsheh explained that the challenge remains in the face of population growth and the increase in daily trips, which requires an expansion of the fleet and an improvement in temporal and spatial coverage, especially in densely populated governorates.
Al-Kharabsheh said that increasing the service rate to one bus per 1000 citizens, instead of 2500, is a fundamental indicator of increased reliance on public transport and reducing congestion.
Al-Kharabsheh highlighted: "The work continues with the available capabilities we have, achieving qualitative progress in the areas of electronic payment, tracking, and monitoring, leading to a more efficient and reliable public transport system."
He added: "When we started in 2025, installing electronic tracking devices for buses, at that time the buses did not have these devices. Today, we have a thousand buses enhanced with these devices, which are beneficial for the operator, the driver, and the Authority, in terms of service monitoring, we are progressing towards reaching a good outcome."
