Khaberni - Iranian official media reported that the Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei stated on Tuesday that US President Donald Trump will not succeed in eliminating the Islamic Republic, following days after Trump’s statement that changing the regime there "would be the best thing that could happen".
US and Iranian negotiators began a second round of negotiations on Tuesday in Geneva, Switzerland, according to Iranian state television, amid ongoing US military pressure.
The same source reported that "indirect talks have begun between Iran and the United States, where the two sides exchange messages" mediated by Oman.
A senior Iranian official stated that the US's seriousness about lifting sanctions on Iran and forsaking unrealistic demands are crucial for the success of the nuclear negotiations in Geneva.
The official, who declined to be named, added that Tehran is coming to the negotiating table with "serious and constructive proposals".
President Donald Trump has been threatening Tehran with a military strike for weeks, amid a crackdown on protests that erupted in late December, resulting in thousands of deaths.
As Washington enhances its military presence in the Middle East, Tehran threatened an immediate response to any aggression. The Revolutionary Guard began maneuvers in the Strait of Hormuz on Monday.
After intense regional diplomatic efforts, Tehran and Washington resumed their negotiations in Muscat on February 6. The round on Tuesday takes place in Geneva but will be hosted by Omani diplomacy.
On Monday evening, Trump continued to exert his pressures on Tehran, stating that he would participate "indirectly" in the negotiations and adding, "I don’t think they want to bear the consequences of not reaching an agreement".
