Khaberni - The President of the Republic of El Salvador, Najib Bukele, announced that the naval forces intercepted a ship carrying 6.6 tons of cocaine in an operation described as the largest of its kind in the country's history.
Bukele wrote in a post: "Our national navy executed the largest drug seizure operation in the history of El Salvador."
He mentioned that the operation took place 380 nautical miles southwest off the country's coast. The navy intercepted the support vessel "FMS Eagle" registered in Tanzania, which is 54 meters long.
Bukele added: "The hidden compartments contained 330 bundles, equivalent to 6.6 tons of cocaine, with an estimated value of $165 million."
The President clarified that the drugs were hidden in the ballast tanks. Divers from the navy were deployed to locate them, where they inspected the structure of the ship and confirmed their presence.
There were ten people aboard the ship: four Colombians, three Nicaraguans, two Panamanians, and one Ecuadorian. All were detained.
Bukele described the operation as another strong blow to drug smuggling, expressing his thanks to "the new ship."
