Real Madrid Breaks Historical Records in La Liga with Number of Penalty Kicks

Khaberni  - Real Madrid shattered a historic record for the number of penalty kicks awarded during a single season in the Spanish Football League.

The on-field referee Hernández Maiso awarded two penalty kicks to Real Madrid during the royal team’s match against their guest Real Sociedad – Saturday – at the Santiago Bernabeu stadium for the 24th round of La Liga, from which the home team scored two goals helping them to secure a broad victory ending at 4-1.

Historical Record for Real Madrid in Number of Penalty Kicks

The number of penalty kicks Real Madrid has received this season (2025-2026) in La Liga rose to 13, which is a record no team has ever reached in a single season according to the Spanish newspaper "Mundo Deportivo".

Real Madrid surpassed the previous record held by their rival Barcelona, when referees awarded them 12 penalties in two different editions in seasons 1950-1951 and 2015-2016.

The newspaper explained that Real Madrid successfully converted 11 out of the 13 penalties awarded to them this season, missing only two.

Real Madrid was awarded penalties in their matches against Osasuna (1-0), Levante (4-1), Villarreal (3-1), Getafe (1-0), Valencia (4-0), Girona (1-1), Deportivo Alaves (2-1), Sevilla (2-0), Levante (2-0), Villarreal (0-2), Rayo Vallecano, and two against Real Sociedad (4-1).

The newspaper pointed out that this tally is double what Barcelona got during the season, and places Real Madrid “in somewhat of an ironic position, considering their usual complaint about refereeing on their TV channel”.

Naturally, Real Madrid has the potential to increase this number during the current season to even more, with 14 matches remaining.

With this number of matches left, some of which are of great significance like the derby against Atletico Madrid and El Clasico against Barcelona, these numbers “raise concerns about what may happen in a season that seems to be closely contested and heated up until its end” as per the newspaper.

Real Madrid jumped to the temporary lead of La Liga after their recent victory over Real Sociedad, raising their points to 60, two points ahead of their rival Barcelona who will be a challenging guest on Girona at Montilivi stadium concluding the same round tomorrow.
