Study warns of a hidden danger in hair extensions

Khaberni - The largest study of its kind has uncovered dangerous chemicals in hair extensions far exceeding levels previously believed.

During the study, researchers analyzed 43 common hair extension products, whether made from synthetic fibers or natural materials, including human hair. Using high-precision chemical analysis techniques, scientists detected more than 900 groups of chemical compounds in those samples, identifying 169 different substances from them.

What alarmed researchers was that nearly all samples, with only two exceptions, contained compounds linked to an increased risk of cancer, hormonal disruptions, growth issues, and negative effects on the immune system.

Among the most notable substances found in the studied hair extension samples were flame retardants, phthalates, insecticides, styrene, and organotin compounds. Organotin compounds were a surprise to researchers as they are typically used as stabilizers in plastics and can cause skin irritation and are linked to hormonal balance disorders.

Substances linked to an increased risk of breast cancer were found in 36 out of 43 samples.
The researchers note the danger of these findings considering that hair extensions are worn for continuous weeks, meaning these substances are in contact with the scalp and neck for long periods, and the use of heat-styling tools may lead to the release of these chemicals into the air that people breathe.

Scientists emphasize that manufacturers are currently not required to disclose the full ingredients of these products, necessitating stricter regulation and mandatory disclosure of ingredients to allow consumers to assess potential risks and make informed decisions.
