French judiciary forms a special team to look into Epsteins documents

Khaberni - The Public Prosecutor's Office in Paris announced on Saturday, the formation of a special team of judges to analyze the files related to the late American financier Jeffrey Epstein, who was convicted of crimes.

The Public Prosecutor's Office told Agence France-Presse that the new team would work in close coordination with the prosecutors in the National Financial Crimes Unit and the police to open investigations into any potential crimes involving French citizens.

As part of this decision, they will revisit their files related to the Frenchman Jean-Luc Brunel, the former model agent who spent time behind bars in 2022.

The goal is to "extract any evidence that can be usefully used in the context of a new investigation," according to the Public Prosecutor's Office.

Brunel, who was close to Epstein, was found dead inside the cell where he had been jailed since the end of 2020 for cases involving "the rape of minors".

Epstein was found dead inside a prison in 2019 before his trial on charges of trafficking minors, in an incident that the US authorities categorized as suicide.

Names of public French figures appear in documents published by the US Department of Justice at the end of January from the case file of Jeffrey Epstein, such as the former French minister Jacques Lang.

Lang, whose name's publication led him to resign from the presidency of the Arab World Institute in Paris, said in an interview with "La Tribune Dimanche" that he is innocent, denouncing what he described as a "tsunami of lies" against him.

Just because someone's name is mentioned in Epstein's files does not necessarily mean they have committed any wrongdoing.
