Egypt imports contraceptives worth billions of Egyptian pounds

Khaberni - Egypt imported various drugs in October 2025 including contraceptives, cancer medications, schistosomiasis medications, heart disease medications, and chronic diseases, in addition to other drugs.
The total value reached 122.1 million US dollars (approximately 5.8 billion Egyptian pounds), according to data from the Foreign Trade Bulletin issued by the Central Agency for Public Mobilization and Statistics.

The pharmaceutical division of the Egyptian Federation of Chambers of Commerce revealed a severe liquidity crisis facing pharmaceutical companies in Egypt as the Egyptian Drug Authority approaches the activation of a unified electronic drug tracking system.

The pharmaceutical market size in Egypt was about 300 billion Egyptian pounds in 2024, and it is expected to exceed 400 billion Egyptian pounds in 2025-2026, amid rapid growth but with ongoing liquidity challenges and a previous shortage of drug varieties.

Data from the Central Agency for Public Mobilization and Statistics recorded at the end of last year that the population of Egypt domestically reached 108 million and 500 thousand people, an increase of 500 thousand people in 126 days; with the internal population count reaching 108 million on August 16th of the previous year.

President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi explicitly expressed in the conference his disapproval of what he called "absolute freedom to reproduce", emphasizing that such freedom for some citizens who lack sufficient awareness poses a significant problem.

The new strategy for Egypt is based on 7 pillars: ensuring reproductive rights, investing in human capital, bolstering women's roles and empowerment, developing educational opportunities, activating media in the development track, addressing climate changes, and governing the population file.

The Minister of Health and Population previously stated that the statement made by President Sisi that "the two biggest dangers facing Egypt in its history are terrorism and population growth" was a motivation in achieving this strategy, explaining that it targets viewing the population as one of the most important elements of the state's comprehensive strength, and the family's right to determine the number of their children.

According to official data, Egypt has undergone several attempts to control birth rates over the last decades, including:

The 1960s: Launching the National Action Charter in 1962, and activating the Supreme Council for Family Planning in 1965.
The 1970s: Establishing the Supreme Council for Family Planning and Population in 1972, and modifying the population policy in 1975.
The 1980s: Launching the first National Population Conference in 1984, and activating work with the National Population Council in 1985.
The 1990s: Creating the Ministry of State for Population and Family Affairs in 1993, launching the International Conference on Population and Development in 1994, and establishing the National Population Council in 1996.
The last decade: Reactivating work with the National Population Council in 2015, and launching the National Project for Family Development in 2022.
