How do sleep disorders affect oral and dental health

Khaberni  - A wide-ranging medical study revealed a link between sleep disorders and an increased risk of gum and dental disease.

The researchers analyzed data obtained from 52 separate studies related to sleep and its effects on health, especially oral and dental health. The results of most studies showed that poor sleep quality, short duration, or sleep disorders—including obstructive sleep apnea—were associated with an increased likelihood of periodontitis and other gum diseases.

The researchers noted that the results were not completely homogeneous in terms of risk rates, as risk estimates varied significantly among the studies, and many were based on observational data, making it difficult to rule out the impact of other factors such as smoking, stress, and chronic diseases on oral and dental health.

Nevertheless, scientists believe that the data obtained indicates a potential role of sleep in oral health, and chronic inflammation may be a common mechanism linking sleep disorders and gum diseases.

Health experts warn that sleep disorders can cause serious health and psychological problems for some, as one medical study showed that the risk of heart failure increases in people with obstructive sleep apnea, while another study found a link between sleep disorders and an increased risk of dementia.
