Khaberni - The European Union confirmed that the new steps approved by the Israeli Security Cabinet (the cabinet) regarding amending land registration and ownership acquisition procedures in the West Bank are "not constructive and not in compliance with international law," warning that they might undermine ongoing international efforts to stabilize and promote peace efforts in the region.
A joint statement issued by the High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Kaya Kalas, and Commissioners Dobravka Suica and Haja Lahbib, on Wednesday, reiterated the European Union's staunch position of not recognizing Israel's sovereignty over the territories occupied since June 1967, in line with relevant Security Council resolutions.
The statement noted that the decisions affecting the implementation of the Hebron Protocol between Israel and the Palestinian Authority put the sensitive status quo at religious sites at real risk.
The European Union renewed its firm commitment to achieving lasting and sustainable peace in accordance with the resolutions of the Security Council, based on the two-state solution, where the state of Israel and the independent, democratic, geographically contiguous, sovereign, and viable state of Palestine live side by side in peace, security, and mutual recognition.
The European Union confirmed that it will continue to work with international partners, including through the Global Alliance for Implementing the Two-State Solution, urging all parties to refrain from unilateral actions that increase tensions and undermine the chances of a negotiated solution, especially in light of the coordinated international efforts underway to advance peace and stability in the region.
