Higher Education Postponement of Military Service for Medical and Dental Students Until They Finish Their Studies

Khaberni - The advisor to the Minister of Higher Education and director of the Unified Admissions Coordination Unit, Mohannad Al-Khatib, said on Monday that in cases where a student is studying medicine and dentistry, military service would be postponed by default because it is part of an annual academic system, and service would commence after their studies end.

Al-Khatib, through "Al-Mamlaka", added that there is a concern among students about the impact of joining the military service program on their university careers, but guidelines have confirmed that "the future of university students is protected and will not be negatively affected during their service period".

These guidelines apply to both bachelor and diploma stages. The instructions state that a student (the draftee) who is invited to the military service program during the semester will receive credit for 12 hours as part of the student's academic plan.

Al-Khatib explained that if the student has not studied military science and national education subjects, these 12 hours will be credited to them; if they have, alternative courses will be looked into.

He noted that the student would not incur any additional financial burden due to the crediting of the 12 accredited hours, and if the student is registered and has paid the university fees and is called to military service, the university fees for the following semester will be credited.

The Council of Ministers has approved the guidelines for accounting lectures and training programs for students of higher education institutions as part of military service and reserve service, based on Article 14 of the Military and Reserve Service Law No. 23 of 1986 and its amendments.

After completing military service, according to the guidelines, the Jordanian Armed Forces – the Arab Army will provide the Ministry of Higher Education and higher education institutions with the names of students who have completed their service, where the ministry will call these students and inform them of the courses that have been credited so they do not retake them.
He confirmed that there will be no impact on the GPA of students whose courses have been credited, as these courses will be part of the university requirements.

Al-Khatib praised the importance of the military service program, affirming that the efforts made by the Jordanian Armed Forces – the Arab Army to develop an integrated program are an important step at both the national and academic levels.

The Council of Ministers had previously decided to count the duration of military service as three months starting from the date of drafting the conscript, according to the provisions of Article 5 of the Military and Reserve Service Law.
