Outrage in Tunisia After the Death of an Infant in a Government Hospital

Khaberni - Social media in Tunisia erupted in anger after news broke of the death of a 9-month-old infant due to not receiving treatment in a government hospital.

Angry comments quickly spread demanding an immediate investigation into the incident and prosecution of the culprits involved.

The infant had become ill before he was transferred to a hospital in the capital, but his family was shocked when the medical staff refused to treat him.

The hospital justified its refusal with the absence of a treatment book and the family's inability to pay the required costs, which later led to his death.

The infant's mother, in a media statement, called for the pursuit of those responsible for this incident.

She said: "The right of her son will not be lost."

Meanwhile, the Public Prosecutor ordered an investigative inquiry into the circumstances and conditions surrounding his death.

Alongside the reactions of angry activists, there came a parliamentary comment, where MP Asmaa Darwish stated, "Poverty and administrative procedures have become barriers to saving lives."

She also considered on Facebook, the incident of the infant's death "a serious alarm that requires real accountability."

Angry comments
It is worth mentioning that this incident brought back to the forefront the debate around the requirement of completing administrative and financial procedures to provide treatment in emergency departments at hospitals.

Angry comments noted that these procedures deprive entire families of their right to treatment due to their social circumstances.
