Dangerous Outbreak Meningitis Devastates the Children of Gaza

Khaberni - Health authorities in the Gaza Strip warn of a dangerous outbreak of meningitis among the displaced along the coastal strip west of the sector, amid an almost complete collapse of the healthcare system, and the recording of the first death of a girl just two days after her diagnosis with the disease.

The pediatrician at Nasser Medical Complex, Darwish Abu Al-Khair, reported that the hospital is currently receiving nine confirmed cases of children under the age of thirteen, including one critical case suffering from bacterial meningitis, while the rest are cases of viral meningitis.

He explained that all the infected are being treated in special isolation rooms, with strict measures taken to prevent the spread of the infection, given the ease of disease transmission through respiratory droplets or human secretions.

He noted that all cases are children living in displacement tents, suffering from severe malnutrition, which exacerbates the disease's severity and reduces the chances of recovery, warning of complications that may include hearing loss, blindness, paralysis, or death.
