Expansion of Autonomous Vehicle Services Robotaxi in Abu Dhabi

Khaberni - The Integrated Transport Center, affiliated to the Department of Municipalities and Transport in Abu Dhabi, announced the expansion of autonomous vehicle (Robotaxi) services to cover new areas across the emirate, under the supervision of the Autonomous Systems Board, in a move that reflects the emirate’s ongoing efforts to enhance its intelligent mobility system and support its sustainable transport targets.

This announcement was made during the seventh edition of the UNMANNED SYSTEMS EXHIBITION & CONFERENCE "UMEX" and Simulation and Training "SimTex" 2026, which was recently held, specializing in autonomous smart systems technologies.

The Center stated in a recent announcement that this expansion aligns with Abu Dhabi's vision for intelligent and autonomous mobility, within a comprehensive strategy aimed at providing safe and effective future transportation solutions that contribute to improving the efficiency of the transportation network and reducing carbon emissions, as well as enhancing the quality of life for all members of the community.

It was mentioned that this service was launched in 2021 and included Yas Island, Saadiyat Island, Reem Island, Maryah Island, and Zayed International Airport, and that the operation area of the Robotaxis would be expanded to include new areas characterized by their vital activity and population density, such as Khalifa City, Masdar City, and Rabdan, along with launching new routes connecting Abu Dhabi Corniche and Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque, providing broader smart mobility options for residents and visitors, and enhancing their benefit from autonomous driving services in the emirate.

The service is commercially operated by "We Ride" and "Uber", in collaboration with the local operator "Tawasul", under the approved permits.

The Center confirmed that the next phase will see an expansion of the autonomous vehicle fleet to meet the increasing demand and support the fast growth of the service, ensuring enhanced operational readiness and performance efficiency.

It was noted that the service has witnessed growing popularity since its launch, achieving a growth in the number of trips by nearly 150% during 2025, due to previous operational expansions and rising user confidence in the smart technologies used in operation, with a safety rate for these vehicles reaching 99.9%.

The Integrated Transport Center, in cooperation with the Autonomous Systems Board and the developing partners, continues to work on enhancing the infrastructure supporting autonomous driving solutions, through developing surveillance and control systems, enhancing advanced communication networks, and providing a safe and reliable operating environment for autonomous vehicles.
