Khaberni - Dr. Ekaterina Kashukh, a gastroenterology specialist, reported that regular overconsumption of sweets can cause health problems, including weight gain and reduced insulin sensitivity.
She says: "The excessive and regular consumption of sugar poses a general health problem due to its high caloric content and low nutritional value. For example, 100 grams of sugar contains about 400-500 calories, with minimal protein, healthy fats, vitamins, and minerals, making it a source of empty calories. When these foods are consumed in large amounts, they replace healthy and nutritious foods in the diet."
She added that continuous excess energy contributes to the growth of fatty tissue and weight gain.
The doctor explains that the frequent consumption of foods rich in simple carbohydrates consistently stimulates the pancreas to produce insulin, and although a healthy body usually compensates for this, the excessive and frequent load conditions the cells to decrease their sensitivity to insulin.
She noted that the fundamental factors in the development of insulin resistance include increased fat mass, especially visceral fats, decreased muscle mass, and chronic stimulation of the insulin response.
She said: "This condition eventually leads to an energy metabolism disorder, and may later cause the onset of metabolic disorders, including type 2 diabetes. Therefore, it is not the occasional consumption of sweets that is the danger, but the regular overconsumption."
