Simple Ways to Maintain Muscle Mass as You Age

Khaberni - As people age, they gradually lose part of their muscle mass, weakening their strength and mobility, and making it harder to perform daily tasks easily and safely. So, what are the simplest ways to maintain muscles from deteriorating?
Recently, a medical study published in the scientific journal Nutrients indicated that regular consumption of mineral water rich in calcium and magnesium has a positive impact on muscle health and protects it from deterioration when a person is over fifty years old.

The study included about 89 elderly individuals, approximately in their sixties, some of whom suffered from osteoporosis accompanied by muscle deterioration - a condition characterized by decreased bone density and muscle mass. The participants were divided into two groups. One group was asked to drink one liter of mineral water rich in calcium and magnesium daily for a year, while the other group consumed regular water not enriched with minerals.

After six months of monitoring, scientists noticed that individuals in the first group had a decrease in falls associated with muscle deterioration, and they saw an increase in muscle mass in their bodies.
The effect was particularly noticeable among those suffering from osteoporosis accompanied by muscle deterioration: they maintained an increase in their muscle mass after six months and after 12 months of drinking the mineral-rich water. However, scientists did not observe significant changes in muscle strength or overall physical activity, indicating a specific effect of these nutrients on muscle mass only.

The authors of the study confirmed that calcium and magnesium found in mineral water are well absorbed by the body and can be an additional simple strategy to support the health of the musculoskeletal system. While this method does not replace physical activity needed to support bone and muscle health, it could be an easy and cost-effective way to reduce frailty and the risk of falls among the elderly.
