Khaberni - The Nineveh Criminal Court in Iraq issued today, Sunday, a death sentence by hanging until death for the doctor Ismail Atiya Karji, convicted of murdering his wife, the doctor Israa Azzam Suleiman, by burning her inside her car, in a horrifying crime that shook the Iraqi public opinion at the end of last year.
The details of the case date back to mid-December 2025, in the "Narkal" district of Mosul, where the perpetrator pursued his wife after she had gone out with their three children for dinner.
According to the investigation records, the husband took advantage of the moment when the victim was alone ascending into the car, smashed the window, poured "gasoline" on her, and deliberately set her on fire in front of her children, who range in age from 6 to 19 years old.
Despite urgent rescue attempts, the victim suffered severe burns covering most of her body and passed away from her injuries after a bitter struggle with pain in the hospital.
Testimonies from those close to the family revealed that the incident was the result of escalating family disputes that began in July 2025.
The investigation indicated that the victim, a pediatric specialist at the "Ibn Sina" Teaching Hospital and 43 years old, had filed a lawsuit for separation shortly before the crime occurred.
The security forces had managed to arrest the perpetrator within less than two hours after the incident, and he was presented to the court, which ultimately concluded the case with a death sentence by hanging.
