Khaberni - Parents of more than 30 infants in the Netherlands reported their children's illnesses and poisoning after consuming Nutrilon milk from Danone.
RTL TV channel reported that the company has launched a wide-scale recall of the product due to the potential presence of a harmful substance.
The parents of the affected infants told reporters that their children suffered from vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pain, and lethargy after consuming the aforementioned formula milk, and in some cases, medical intervention was needed.
The TV channel noted that many of the infants were later taken to the hospital.
Danone, the manufacturer of Nutrilon products, announced the recall of 14 types of children's food in the Netherlands, including infant milk and other products. This recall included 44 batches that were on the market. The recall was due to the potential elevated levels of cereulide toxin, which is produced by Bacillus cereus bacteria.
Meanwhile, it was noted that a direct link between the illness of children and consumption of the aforementioned formula milk had not been proven.
Danone stated that the product recall is being conducted as a "precautionary measure", in coordination with the Dutch Food and Product Safety Authority (NVWA).
Experts from the National Food and Product Safety Authority (NVWA) indicate that exposure to cereulide can cause severe nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea, and that newborns are particularly at risk of dehydration. This toxic substance is heat-resistant and can remain even when preparing formula milk with boiling water. It is suspected that the contamination of the product may have originated from one of its components, arachidonic acid oil, used in the production of infant milk.
