Khaberni - In a scene that reflects the accelerated steps towards comprehensive digital transformation, the wired broadband internet service using fiber optic technology (fiber) continues to dominate the Jordanian fixed internet market, registering significant figures that reflect a radical change in the Jordanian consumer's behavior who is increasingly seeking "maximum speed" without compromise.
The number of subscriptions to the service, according to the latest official figures issued by the Telecommunications Regulatory Commission, reached about 638,000 subscriptions at the end of the third quarter of last year compared with 591,000 subscriptions at the end of the year before last, according to Al-Ghad.
According to official figures, the number of subscriptions for fixed broadband internet services using "fiber" technology increased by 8% in the first nine months of last year compared with the end of the year before last.
Fixed broadband services, through fiber optic technology “fiber,” continue to spread and grow in the local telecommunications market, particularly among seekers and users of high-speed broadband in a country where the number of internet users with all its fixed and mobile technologies is estimated at about 11 million.
Today, major telecommunications companies compete in offering “fiber” services with competitive deals, aimed at spreading the service in the capital Amman and other governorates of the kingdom.
This growth comes thanks to several factors, the most important of which is the ability to provide stable speeds unaffected by weather conditions or wireless interference, and the price-speed equation; the fierce competition among major telecommunications companies in the capital and the governorates has led to offers that make owning high-speed internet an economically feasible option for families, as well as a change in lifestyle for the user; with the expansion of remote work, e-learning, and entertainment streaming platforms, traditional internet is no longer sufficient to meet the needs of modern households.
There are five fiber optic networks in the local market provided by the private sector, three of which are overseen by mobile telecommunications companies operating in the local market, alongside the national fiber optic network project overseen by the government led by the Ministry of Digital Economy and Entrepreneurship, which has been opened for investment and participation by the private sector.
Furthermore, in a related context, fiber services subscriptions at the end of the third quarter of last year constituted the largest share of total fixed broadband internet subscriptions with all available technologies in the local market, capturing 77% of the total fixed internet subscriptions, which amounted to about 824,000 subscriptions.
This share increased by about 7 percentage points when compared to its recorded share at the end of the same period last year when it was about 70%.
High-speed fixed internet services in the kingdom are provided by many providers through various fixed technologies including "ADSL", "FBWA", "fiber", and others, and "fiber optic technology" describes a type of cables or technology that uses light, and it refers to the medium and technology associated with transmitting information and data over long distances in the form of light pulses, through a glass tube, plastic, or optical fibers.
