Israel Imposes Record Fine on Airline

Khaberni - The Israeli Competition Authority said on Sunday that it intends to impose a fine of 121 million shekels ($39 million) on El Al for unfairly raising the prices of flight tickets during the Israel-Gaza war.

This fine is the maximum legally allowed.

The Competition Authority concluded that El Al had monopolized 38 out of 53 air routes it operates, including to New York, London, Paris, Bangkok, and other cities in the United States, Europe, and Asia, from October 7, 2023, to May 2024.

It also noted that ticket prices had risen by an average of 16% and in some periods, reached 31%, pointing out that most foreign airlines had stopped their flights, which made El Al "monopolize the market".

El Al said it "categorically rejects" the claims of imposing high prices during the war.
