Khaled Meshaal Speaks Out on Hamas Arms

Khaberni - The head of Hamas abroad, Khaled Meshaal, stated that Palestinians are facing a difficult reality two years after the war on Gaza, emphasizing that the cessation of fighting does not signify the end of suffering amid ongoing violations.

This was stated during his participation in the seventeenth Al Jazeera Forum held in Doha titled "The Palestinian Cause and Regional Balances," where he emphasized that the current stage requires an urgent humanitarian response including relief, shelter, and empowering residents, in addition to halting violations.

Meshaal explained that the coming stage raises major questions related to disarmament, international forces, the future governance of the sector, and the withdrawal of the occupation, affirming that the movement and other Palestinian forces are seeking political approaches within a shared national vision to address these issues and restore Gaza to its normal state.

He mentioned that recent developments have prompted the world to revisit the issue of the Palestinian state. However, he considered that broad international recognition is insufficient unless it is transformed into a tangible political reality, pointing out that the core problem lies in the continuation of the occupation, and that solving the issue must start from this basis.

Meshaal confirmed that resistance - according to his view - is a right for peoples under occupation, and it is part of the political history of peoples and their experiences, stressing the need to view its course within a broader historical context, and not as separate incidents.

He addressed the regional and international transformations, noting that the Palestinian cause has gained increasing sympathy, especially among young generations in the West, and that international public pressure played a role in stopping the war, urging the leveraging of these transformations to enhance the political presence of the cause globally.

Meshaal emphasized that the upcoming period requires broader Arab and Islamic coordination and shared strategies to protect regional interests, and to work on establishing the presence of the Palestinian cause in the changing international system, contributing to advancing its political resolution.

In the context of his speech, the head of Hamas abroad said that proposing the disarmament of Palestinians while the occupation continues represents an attempt to make the Palestinian people "an easy target to eliminate," considering that any discussion of this kind must start from addressing the root of the conflict.

Meshaal confirmed that the phase following the war on Gaza requires providing an environment that ensures reconstruction, relief, and preventing the renewal of fighting, noting that the movement discussed the issue of arms through regional intermediaries, including Qatar, Turkey, and Egypt, in addition to indirect dialogues with the United States through intermediaries.

He pointed out that the mediators showed an understanding of the movement's vision on this issue, indicating the possibility of approaches based on "security guarantees" instead of political pressures, emphasizing that the threat - according to him - comes from the occupation and not from the Gaza Strip, which needs a long time to recover.

He noted that among the proposals put forward is the presence of international peacekeeping forces at the borders, in addition to offering a long-term truce lasting between five and ten years, considering that these steps represent practical guarantees, alongside the role of mediators in stabilizing stability.

He added that the issue does not lie in guarantees offered by the Palestinian factions, but in the "Israeli" policies that seek - according to his words - to disarm the Palestinians, while supporting other armed groups to create internal chaos.

Meshaal concluded by calling on the United States, European countries, and international powers to deal with the Palestinian issue from an objective perspective, away from bias, and to work on addressing the roots of the conflict leading to a comprehensive political solution.
