Head of Truck Owners in Jordan The Syrian Decision Contradicts Agreements

Khaberni  - Truck Owners Guild leader Mohammad Khair Dawood said that the recent Syrian decision on the entry of Jordanian trucks was unexpected and contrary to the existing Jordan-Syria agreement, stating that it has disrupted the Jordanian fleet and will negatively impact national exports.

Dawood added, on Saturday, that hundreds of trucks piled up inside and outside the borders, amid the inability to carry out goods exchange operations in such numbers, pointing to perishable goods and others that cannot withstand delays, in addition to goods that are difficult to exchange, according to the Kingdom.

He clarified that the joint agreements allow Jordanian trucks loaded to enter Syria and return if there is a load available, and the same applies to Syrian trucks, considering that stopping direct entry constitutes a breach of these understandings.

Dawood explained that although the decision, motivated by security concerns to control the situation, will have adverse effects, calling for a suspension of the decision and a return to direct entry for its impact on the smooth flow of trade and the protection of goods.

He emphasized the need for Jordanian official bodies to communicate with the Syrian side to ensure respect for agreements, and allow the entry of Jordanian trucks, providing guarantees for the safety of trucks and drivers, noting unjustified assaults on Jordanian drivers and the destruction of their trucks.

He mentioned that the daily freight movement exceeds a thousand trucks back and forth, averaging about 500 trucks entering Syria and a similar number returning, warning that the exchange system does not serve either party and will lead to cargo congestion and waiting periods that may exceed 15 days, exacerbating the risks of goods spoilage.
