A shop in Aqaba sells a rare fish for food

Khaberni – A fish shop in the city of Aqaba is offering a rare fish known as the guitarfish for sale for culinary use, in an unusual step due to the rarity of this type.

According to followers, the guitarfish is one of the uncommon marine creatures in the Red Sea waters, which has prompted social media users to question the legality of its fishing and sale.

The guitarfish is scientifically known as Rhinobatidae, and it is a cartilaginous fish that combines features of both sharks and rays, characterized by a flattened body and a broad head resembling a guitar, which has given it its common name.

The guitarfish usually lives in shallow coastal waters and on sandy bottoms, and feeds on small marine organisms.

Some species of guitarfish are globally classified as endangered due to overfishing and the degradation of their natural habitats, making their fishing or trade subject to regulation in several countries.
