Arrest of a Tunisian MP who criticized President Said

Khaberni  - Tunisian police detained parliament member Ahmed Saeedani on Wednesday, who has become a fierce critic of President Kais Saied.

On Wednesday evening, Tunisian MP Bilal Al-Mashri announced that his colleague Saeedani was detained by the security authorities without clarification of the reasons, while no official confirmation regarding the arrest has been issued by the authorities.

Saeedani -recently- has been known for his fierce criticism of President Kais Saied, and on Tuesday, he mocked the president on Facebook, describing him as "the supreme commander of sewage and stormwater drainage," criticizing the absence of any achievements by Saied.

It is noteworthy that Saeedani is a member of the parliamentary group of the National Sovereign Line (which includes 15 deputies out of a total of 161 deputies), and he regularly posts updates and videos on his Facebook account, where he criticizes the policies of his country's authorities and the statements of President Kais Saied.

On January 21, President Said blamed "corruption" for the floods, calling for accountability of the officials.

Two weeks ago, Tunisia experienced severe weather fluctuations that resulted in the death of 7 people and caused water levels to rise in several cities, leading to paralysis in transportation and the suspension of schooling in several states, amid field interventions by civil protection teams.

Since July 25, 2021, Tunisia has been experiencing a political crisis when Saied began enforcing exceptional measures that included dissolving the parliament, issuing legislations by presidential decrees, adopting a new constitution through a referendum, and conducting early legislative elections.
