Russia We have the freedom to act after the end of the New START treaty

Khaberni - The Russian Foreign Ministry confirmed today, Wednesday, that Moscow is still open to exploring political and diplomatic ways to stabilize the strategic situation after the end of the "New START" treaty.

"Washington's approach to the START treaty is wrong"
The statement clarified that it has not yet received an official response from the United States to its proposal to commit to the limits of the new START treaty.

It added that Moscow assumes that the parties to the treaty are no longer bound by their obligations, and that it has the freedom to choose its next steps.

The ministry also pointed out that Russia is ready to act responsibly and wisely, and to take decisive military technical measures to mitigate the threats after the expiration of the new START treaty.

It expressed that Washington's approach to the new START treaty is wrong and regrettable.

This came after the Russian presidency "the Kremlin" warned on Tuesday of the dangers of the expiration of the last nuclear treaty between the United States and Russia in a few days.

The end of "New START" threatens an unrestricted nuclear world

Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov told the media, shortly before the expiration of the "New START" treaty, that "the world will be in a more dangerous situation in a few days than it has ever been."

He noted that for the first time, the United States and Russia, which have the largest two nuclear arsenals, would be without any fundamental document to restrict and regulate these arsenals, considering this extremely bad for global security.

What is "New START"?
It is noted that the expiration of the "New START" treaty is scheduled for Thursday, and it is the last operative agreement between Washington and Moscow for nuclear arms reduction.

The treaty, signed in 2010, restricts both the American and Russian arsenals to a ceiling of no more than 1550 strategic nuclear warheads each, representing a reduction of about 30% compared to the previous ceiling set in 2002.

The treaty also sets the maximum number of heavy bombers at 800 bombers for each country, a number that is sufficient to destroy the Earth.

Russia announced in February 2023 the suspension of its participation in the treaty without formally withdrawing from it, stating at the same time that it would continue to respect the set limits.

However, before that, Moscow accused Washington of obstructing the scheduled inspections under "New START", which were suspended in the context of the war between Russia and Ukraine.

This came after the United States withdrew in 2019 from a fundamental disarmament treaty concluded in 1987 with Russia on intermediate-range nuclear missiles.
