Russian Delegation in Damascus Discusses Military Cooperation Development

Khaberni  - The Russian Deputy Defense Minister Yunus Bek Bifkurov held talks today, Wednesday, in Damascus with the Syrian General Chief of Staff Major General Ali Al-Nasan.

The Russian military delegation's discussions in Damascus followed the recent visit of President Ahmad Al-Shar'a to Moscow, where he met his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin and a number of Russian officials in January, attended by Defense Minister Mirhef Abu Qasra and Foreign Minister Asaad Al-Sheibani.

The Syrian Ministry of Defense stated on its Telegram channel that the talks addressed the development and enhancement of military cooperation serving the common interests of the two countries, noting that the visit by the Russian military delegation will last several days.

In November, Defense Minister Mirhef Abu Qasra in Damascus welcomed a Russian military delegation led by Bifkurov, where they discussed military cooperation areas and enhancing coordination mechanisms serving the common interests and aspirations of both countries.

On October 28, the Syrian Defense Minister conducted talks with his Russian counterpart Andrei Belousov in Moscow, discussing support for bilateral relations and the exchange of expertise in training and many other areas.

Major General Al-Nasan also conducted talks in Moscow in October that addressed the development of coordination mechanisms between the defense ministries of the two countries.

Russian forces are still present at two military bases in the provinces of Tartus and Latakia in western Syria, located on the Mediterranean Sea.

Moscow has been a major supporter of the ousted regime of Bashar al-Assad throughout his quarter-century rule, intervened militarily in his favor starting in 2015, particularly influencing the battlefield in his favor through aerial raids, and he fled to it after the rebels entered Damascus on December 8, last year.
