Nvidia Chip Sales Halt to China

Khaberni - The Financial Times reported, citing informed people, that the sales of Nvidia’s artificial intelligence chips (H200) to China are still halted nearly two months after U.S. President Donald Trump approved their export, pending a review related to U.S. national security.

At the same time, the newspaper said, Chinese customers are not placing orders for these advanced chips until it becomes clear whether they will be able to obtain the licenses or what the conditions for obtaining them will be.

Reuters has not yet been able to verify the accuracy of this report. Neither Nvidia nor the U.S. State Department have responded to Reuters' request for comment outside of business hours yet.

In January, the U.S. Commerce Department eased restrictions on exporting (H200) chips to China but required that license applications be reviewed by the U.S. Departments of State, Defense, and Energy.

The Financial Times stated that the Commerce Department has completed its analysis, but the State Department is pushing for more stringent restrictions to make it harder for China to use the (H200) chips in ways that could undermine U.S. national security.

Last week, Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang expressed hope that China would allow the American tech giant to sell its powerful artificial intelligence chip (H200) in the world’s second-largest economy, stating that the licensing is in the final stages.

Last month, Reuters reported that China had approved the import of the first batch of Nvidia’s artificial intelligence chips (H200), representing a shift in its stance as Beijing seeks to balance its AI needs with stimulating local development.
