Khaberni - Dr. Sarah Molindo, a sexologist, points out that insufficient fluid intake, low testosterone levels, stress, and antidepressants lead to decreased semen volume in men.
According to the doctor, men typically produce between 2 to 5 milliliters of semen per sexual climax, which is approximately half to one teaspoon. Values less than 1.5 to 2 ml are considered low, and prolonged decreases may indicate a sperm count deficiency.
Molindo points out that hydration is one of the key factors affecting semen volume, as the fluid is primarily composed of water, thus dehydration directly reduces its volume. Hormone levels, especially testosterone, also play a crucial role, where a deficiency can reduce ejaculation force and semen amount.
The volume of semen also depends on the condition of the prostate gland and seminal vesicles, as inflammation or dysfunction of these glands can lead to a substantial decrease in volume. The frequency of ejaculation also affects the amount, as the body cannot replenish its supply quickly during short periods. Molindo explains that full recovery typically takes from 24 to 48 hours, and laboratory tests recommend refraining from sexual activity for two to seven days.
Among lifestyle factors, the expert points to stress and chronic fatigue, explaining that elevated cortisol levels can suppress testosterone production and weaken sexual response including ejaculation. Additionally, some medications, such as antidepressants, high blood pressure drugs, prostate medications, and hormone therapy, can also affect semen volume.
Molindo confirms that if the decrease in semen volume persists, especially if it occurs with the start of new medications or the emergence of other symptoms, it is advisable to consult a doctor.
