Khaberni - The Public Prosecutor's Office in Libya announced the initiation of a preliminary investigation into the killing of Saif al-Islam Muammar Gaddafi, following the receipt of an official report stating that the crime occurred inside his residence in the city of Zintan, west of the country.
By order of the Public Prosecutor, the specialized investigation team was enabled to take all legal measures, including moving to the scene of the incident, field inspection, collecting evidence, securing related objects, hearing witnesses, and appointing technical and forensic experts from various specializations, including forensic medicine, weaponry, toxicology, and fingerprint analysis.
The field inspection was conducted on Tuesday, February 3, 2026, in the presence of forensic doctors and specialized experts, where the body of the deceased was examined at the scene of the incident. The forensic examination confirmed that the victim was directly shot, resulting in his death.
The Public Prosecutor's Office confirmed that the investigation team has already started gathering and analyzing evidence, identifying a circle of suspects, and taking the necessary legal measures in preparation for initiating public prosecution against the individuals involved in the crime.
This comes amid media reports suggesting that the assassination was executed by four unknown individuals who stormed into the residence of Saif al-Islam, shot him in the garden of his house, and then fled the scene. Some sources also mentioned that the operation was preceded by the disabling of the surveillance system at the premises.
Mr. Abdullah Othman, Saif al-Islam's advisor and head of his political team, confirmed the death through his official page, describing the deceased as "a fighter," without providing further details about the circumstances of the incident.
In the same context, the 444th Combat Brigade, affiliated with the government forces in Tripoli, denied any involvement in the incident, affirming in an official statement that "no orders were issued to pursue Saif al-Islam Gaddafi," and that its forces are not deployed inside Zintan or its surroundings.
The Public Prosecutor's Office concluded its statement by affirming that investigations are still ongoing to uncover the circumstances of the crime, the identity of the perpetrators, and the entities that may be involved either directly or indirectly.
