Khaberni - Dr. Asem Mansour, the General Director of the King Hussein Cancer Center, said that the cost of treating cancer patients in Jordan reaches 250 million dinars annually, emphasizing that these figures highlight the magnitude of the health and economic challenges faced by the health system in the Kingdom.
Mansour added that the most prevalent types of cancer in Jordan are non-infectious cancers, which are mainly linked to lifestyle, such as colon and lung cancer.
Mansour explained that 25% of cancer cases among men in Jordan are due to colon, lung, and bladder cancer, noting that most of these cases are associated with smoking.
Mansour also emphasized that every man or woman at the age of 50 should undergo a regular colonoscopy, as the recovery rate for colon cancer reaches 90% if detected early. However, he warned that neglecting screening or discovering the disease in its fourth stage makes treatment more difficult.
Mansour continued that 40% of cancer cases among women are breast cancer cases, meaning that out of every 10 women with cancer, four suffer from breast cancer, which is the most common type among Jordanian women.
He noted that the causes of breast cancer are divided into 15% hereditary, while the other reasons are unspecified, with factors such as delayed pregnancy and lack of breastfeeding that may contribute to increasing the risks.
Mansour confirmed that early awareness and regular screening are key in preventing many types of cancer, emphasizing the importance of adopting a healthy lifestyle to reduce the likelihood of developing the disease.
