AlShar Welcomes Kurdish Delegation Affirms Commitment to Their Rights

Khaberni - The Syrian Presidency reported that President Ahmad Al-Shar' had received a Kurdish delegation on Tuesday, confirming his commitment to guarantee the rights of Kurdish citizens within the framework of the constitution.

The Syrian Presidency stated that Al-Shar' received "in the People's Palace in Damascus a delegation from the Kurdish National Council, and during the meeting reaffirmed the state’s commitment to guaranteeing the rights of Kurdish citizens within the framework of the constitution."

It was explained that the delegation welcomed Presidential Decree No. /13/ and considered it an important step in enhancing rights and preserving cultural and social identity.

Damascus and the Syrian Democratic Forces announced on Friday, reaching a "comprehensive" agreement to integrate the civil and military institutions of the Kurdish Self-Administration into the state, a move described by Washington as a "historic milestone."

The two sides reached the agreement amidst a ceasefire between their forces that began on January 20, following weeks of tension and clashes during which the Syrian Democratic Forces ("SDF") lost control over large areas in the north and east of the country, against the advance of government forces.

The new agreement includes "the withdrawal of military forces from contact points and the entry of security forces belonging to the Ministry of the Interior into the centers of Hasakah and Qamishli" in northeastern Syria.

The agreement announced on Friday ends the hopes of the Kurds to maintain their self-administration, coming after an understanding announced earlier this month about the future of predominantly Kurdish areas.

The new agreement stipulates the formation of a military division including three brigades of the Syrian Democratic Forces within the Syrian army in northeast Syria, in addition to forming another brigade for the forces of Kobani (Ain Al-Arab), which holds a special status for the Kurds of Syria, within a military division belonging to the government forces in the north of the country.

The agreement aims, according to the terms published by "SDF" and a government source to the official media, to "unify the Syrian territories."
