How does Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder ADHD appear in girls

Khaberni - It is estimated that Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) affects millions of children around the world. Despite an increase in diagnoses over the past two decades due to heightened awareness, ADHD often goes undetected in girls; this may negatively affect their self-confidence and mental health.

Experts at the British Child Mind Institute explain that girls with ADHD "tend to blame themselves and internalize anger and pain," and they are more likely to suffer from depression, anxiety, and eating disorders compared to those without the disorder.

Mark Pattison, CEO and founder of Care ADHD, points out that this disorder in girls often appears as distractibility and mental preoccupation. They may come across as forgetful, disorganized, and find it difficult to start or complete tasks; this makes them feel confused and lowered self-esteem.

As for hyperactivity, it might appear slightly different in girls, and according to Pattison: "It may manifest as continuous movement, excessive talking, or interrupting others, in addition to feelings of inner anxiety and rapid thoughts."

These behaviors are often less obvious at home or in school; which leads to fewer diagnoses, and they may be misunderstood as anxiety, low self-confidence, or simply lack of effort.

Dr. Kenneth Lee, a child ADHD specialist at London Psychiatry Clinic, notes that attention difficulties often begin from early childhood, but become clearer with increased academic and social demands in high school.

Pattison advises parents to monitor daily behavior patterns, discuss challenges with the child, engage with the school, and consult a general practitioner for an ADHD evaluation referral, while creating a supportive routine at home to protect the girl's self-confidence while waiting.
