Why does knee pain worsen at night

Khaberni - Many people suffer from worsening knee pain during the night hours, which may be associated with inflammatory conditions or previous injuries, and directly affects the quality of sleep. Orthopedic surgeon Dr. Kim Stearns confirms that nighttime knee pain often has a clear cause, and usually does not occur in those with healthy joints.

Kim explains that the lack of movement at night plays a role in increasing pain, as joint movement during the day helps keep them "lubricated," whereas inactivity leads to stiffness and an increased feeling of pain.

The most common causes include osteoarthritis, which is most prevalent and may worsen with wear and tear, in addition to rheumatoid arthritis, tendonitis or bursitis, and patellofemoral pain syndrome, known as "runner's knee."

Gout may also be a cause of sudden severe nocturnal pain, along with various knee injuries, or Osgood-Schlatter disease in children and adolescents.

How can the pain be alleviated?
Kim advises consulting a doctor if the pain affects sleep or daily activities, to diagnose the cause and establish an appropriate treatment plan. For temporary relief, she recommends engaging in low-impact exercises such as swimming and cycling to reduce joint stress.

Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs such as ibuprofen or naproxen can be used after consulting a doctor, along with alternating heat and cold treatments to relieve pain and swelling. Topical ointments or patches can help in some cases.

Adjusting the sleeping position can also reduce the pain, such as sleeping on the side with a pillow between the knees, or placing a pillow under the knees when sleeping on the back.

Dr. Concludes that nighttime knee pain is not something to live with; it can be treated and controlled with proper diagnosis and care.
