Iranian Foreign Ministry We are studying diplomatic paths with the United States

Khaberni - Ismail Baqai, spokesman for the Iranian Foreign Ministry, said on Monday that Tehran is studying the details of various diplomatic paths to address tensions with the United States, adding that Iran hopes to achieve results in the coming days.

On Sunday, US President Donald Trump expressed hope for reaching an agreement with Iran after Iranian President Ali Khamenei warned that any attack on Iran would lead to a regional war.

For weeks now, Trump has been threatening military action against Tehran over the crackdown on protests, which has resulted in thousands of deaths. Washington has strengthened its forces in the Middle East and sent the aircraft carrier Abraham Lincoln to the region.

The reinforcements have raised concerns among regional countries about the outbreak of war exacerbating the situation in the area, and a number of them have worked on mediation between Washington and Tehran.

In a stern warning, Khamenei said, "The Americans must realize that if they start a war, it will be a regional war."

Khamenei, who has led Iran since 1989 and has the final say in senior policies, added, "We are not those who start wars... nor do we seek to aggress any country. However, in the face of anyone who dares to attack or cause harm, the Iranian people will deliver a decisive blow."

In response to a question posed by journalists about Khamenei’s warning, Trump replied, "Of course he would say that". He added, "We hope to reach an agreement. If we don't reach an agreement, then we will find out if he is right or not."

The United States had previously bombed Iran during the 12-day war between Iran and Israel in June 2025. In recent days, Iranian officials have warned of an immediate and strong response to any military action against Tehran.

The current escalation of tension follows widespread protests that Iran experienced starting from late December 2025, which were met by a campaign of brutal repression that resulted in thousands of deaths.

Describing the wave of protests that erupted on the backdrop of economic demands and gradually took on a political nature, Khamenei said, "It was more like an 'attempted coup'."

Khamenei said during a meeting at his headquarters in the Iranian capital broadcast by the official TV that the protesters "attacked police, government buildings, Revolutionary Guard barracks, banks, mosques, and burned Qurans... It was a real coup," adding that the attempt "failed".

He added, "This was not the first fitna (strife) in Tehran, and it won't be the last. Such incidents may recur."
