Khaberni - More than 1100 flights have been canceled across the United States, early in the morning on Sunday, as a powerful winter storm caused snowfall of up to a foot thick in many areas, retreated to the sea, while the eastern and southern coasts still suffer from a severe cold wave.
The National Weather Service said the snowfall would start to subside around noon in most parts of North Carolina, where up to 14 inches (36 centimeters) have been reported in inland areas, and many coastal areas reporting up to 12 inches, according to Bloomberg News today, Sunday.
The Weather Service added that the storm would intensify offshore, where it could generate hurricane-force winds on the high seas.
While wind speeds might reach 50 miles (80 kilometers) per hour in eastern Massachusetts, the northeast of the country will escape the worst of the weather conditions.
Rich Otto, a weather forecaster at the American Weather Forecasting Center, said "It is far enough offshore that it will not have a significant impact."
