Participation in Quran Memorization Courses The Ministry of Religious Affairs Implements 870 Alternative Punishments in 2025

Khaberni - The Ministry of Religious Endowments and Islamic Affairs implemented 870 alternative punishments in 2025 in the ministry’s mosques and women’s affairs departments, in cooperation with the Ministry of Justice.

The ministry indicated that the implemented alternative punishments included 690 alternative punishments through providing community services inside mosques managed by the department of religious endowments, in addition to 180 alternative punishments through community monitoring and participation in Quran memorization courses in centers spread across various regions.

It pointed out that the Ministry of Religious Endowments's implementation of alternative punishments is part of cooperation with the Ministry of Justice to apply alternatives to freedom-depriving punishments.

It explained that the alternative punishments contribute to the rehabilitation of the convicted by integrating them into positive environments that support proper behavior. The mosques provide an atmosphere of tranquility and moral discipline, which reflects on several beneficiaries of these punishments regularly attending mosques and maintaining the five daily prayers, indicating a tangible improvement in their behavior.

It added that the alternative punishments reflect a qualitative leap in the concept of criminal justice, highlighting an advanced path for the Jordanian judiciary that relies on reform rather than mere punishment.

It confirmed that these punishments focus on reintegrating the convicted into society through public benefit work, developing a sense of responsibility and belonging in them, and opening the way for them to make positive contributions and humanitarian work.

It noted that alternative punishments are not a novelty in the Islamic value system, as Islamic jurisprudence has established this principle for centuries through reformative alternatives like expiations, which include emancipation, fasting, and feeding the needy.

According to the Ministry of Justice, community service is obliging the convicted, with their consent, to perform unpaid work serving the community, for a duration set by the court, not less than (50) hours, at a rate of 5 hours per day.
