Khaberni - Today, the Fifth Settlement area in Cairo witnessed a sudden 15-meter deep ground subsidence inside a gas station, leading to a lateral collapse of some commercial shops at the site and injuring two people, amidst fears of others being trapped under the rubble.
Eye witnesses indicated that the ground subsidence caused a lateral collapse at the gas station resulting in the fall of some commercial shops, with several people trapped under the rubble, while rescue teams continued their efforts to extract them.
Local media explained that the Cairo Civil Protection operations room received an urgent report about the incident, and rescue and civil protection teams immediately moved to the site. A security cordon was set up to secure the area and start the search for any trapped individuals.
An initial inspection showed that the collapse completely destroyed two commercial premises, one selling flowers and the other sweets, with several workers inside them at the time of the incident, resulting in two injuries who were transported to the hospital for necessary medical care.
The authorities clarified that the incident might have been caused by neighboring excavation works at the station site, which caused soil destabilization and led to the subsidence.
A formal record of the incident was documented, and the public prosecutor was notified to take over the investigation, while an engineering committee was formed to examine the site and ensure the safety of surrounding buildings and take necessary legal actions, with rescue teams continuing their search operations to ensure no one is trapped under the debris.
