Morocco deploys army to aid in evacuating thousands after floods video

Khaberni - Moroccan television reported on Saturday that the government has deployed army rescue units to help evacuate thousands after floods caused by heavy rains submerged areas in northwest Morocco, raising river levels.

A flood monitoring committee said that heavy rains continuing for weeks, along with water discharge from a nearby near-full dam, have raised water levels in the Loukkos river valley, flooding several neighborhoods in the city of Larache, located about 190 kilometers north of the capital Rabat.

Official media stated that more than 20,000 people have been moved to shelters and camps by today.
The authorities have placed sandbags and temporary barriers in flood-prone areas.
As a precaution, orders have been issued to close schools in Larache until February 7.
