Windows 11 Advances Closer to Handoff Feature

Khaberni - "Microsoft" launched a new update for Windows 11 that enhances the integration of smartphones with computers, in an attempt to compete with Apple's famous Handoff feature, by expanding support for resuming Android apps directly on the computer.

Resuming apps between phone and computer
In May 2025, "Microsoft" began releasing the Cross-Device Resume feature, which was initially limited to the OneDrive app only, allowing the user to open files or continue working on them through a notification that appears on the computer if they had been used in the last five minutes on the phone.

With the new update, which reached versions 26100.7701 and 26200.7701 of Windows 11 through the Release Preview channel, the range of the feature has expanded to include more apps, but currently for Android users only, according to a report published by "phonearena" and reviewed by "Al Arabiya Business".

New supported apps
The apps that now support cross-device resuming include:

- Spotify.

- Microsoft Office suite.

- Microsoft Edge browser.

- Vivo browser.

- Files opened via Copilot on the phone, for devices from "Samsung", "Honor", "Oppo", "Vivo", and "Xiaomi".

This update is expected to reach all users in the near future.

The path is still long
Despite this progress, the Windows 11 feature is still far from the level of integration provided by "Apple" through Handoff, which enables seamless transition between different "Apple" devices without any complications.

However, "Microsoft"'s ongoing development of the feature is a positive indicator of its commitment to building a more interconnected ecosystem.

Currently, the update is available only to Windows Insider program subscribers and is being rolled out gradually, with arrival to regular users expected in the coming weeks.

"Microsoft" challenges compared to "Apple"
"Apple" relies on a closed system that it fully controls, making integration between its devices easier and smoother.

In contrast, "Microsoft" faces a bigger challenge because of the diversity of Android phone manufacturing companies and not owning the system itself.

Observers believe that a deeper partnership between "Microsoft" and "Google" could make a significant difference, especially if Chrome browser support is included in the Cross-Device Resume feature.

The future of device integration
Today, users are increasingly interested in having an integrated ecosystem that allows quick transitions between phone and computer.

Although "Apple" has led in this field, the development of Windows 11 features with Android might make the system more appealing, especially for those looking for more flexibility and customization options.

As support for more apps and devices expands in the future, this feature could become one of the decisive factors that enhance the position of Windows and Android against Apple's integrated ecosystem.
