Khaberni - Minister of Environment Ayman Suliman affirmed Jordan's firm commitment to supporting the Green Middle East initiative.
He emphasized during his participation in the initiative's second ministerial meeting, held in Jeddah under the chairmanship of Saudi Arabia, Jordan’s support for the strategic directions of the initiative, particularly in the fields of land restoration, combating desertification, and enhancing adaptation to the effects of climate change, considering these as urgent national priorities in the light of water scarcity and land degradation challenges.
Suliman expressed his gratitude and appreciation to Saudi Arabia for leading the initiative and hosting the meeting, praising the efforts of the General Secretariat in enhancing governance, developing coordination mechanisms, and following up on the implementation of the initiative’s outcomes.
He pointed to the progress made since the previous ministerial meeting, especially in developing institutional frameworks, data exchange, and adopting a clear mechanism for rotating the chairmanship of the ministerial council.
He noted that Jordan has completed updating the national biodiversity strategy in line with the global Kunming-Montreal framework and is about to finalize the preparation of the fourth report for nationally determined contributions to climate change during the first half of this year.
He emphasized the importance of data exchange and building technical capabilities, aligning national strategies with the goals of the initiative, especially in dry and fragile environments, in line with the vision of economic modernization, within the axis of sustainability and green growth. Jordan is working to increase green spaces through a national goal of planting 10 million trees over ten years, with about 2.5 million trees already planted under the first executive program of the economic modernization vision, contributing to improving ecosystems, reducing the impacts of climate change, and enhancing the quality of life.
He renewed Jordan’s commitment to contributing to achieving the goals of the Green Middle East initiative through land restoration programs, applying nature-based solutions, exchanging expertise with member countries, inviting new countries to join the initiative, and calling for enhanced regional cooperation and transforming commitments into tangible results on the ground.
