11 Minutes of Walking a Day Could Protect You from Stroke

Khaberni - A recent scientific study revealed that brisk walking for 11 minutes daily may be sufficient to reduce the risk of heart disease and stroke, as well as lowering the chances of contracting several types of cancer.

According to a study published in 2023 in the British Journal of Sports Medicine, engaging in just 75 minutes of moderate-intensity physical activity weekly can yield significant health benefits, even for those who find it difficult to commit to long-term exercise programs or going to gyms.

The study was based on analyzing data from about 30 million participants within 94 large-scale studies, conducted by researchers from the Medical Research Council Epidemiology Unit at the University of Cambridge. The results showed that this minimal level of physical activity reduces the risk of early death by 23%.

The study also indicated that short daily walks contribute to reducing the risk of cardiovascular diseases by 17%, and cancer in general by 7%, in addition to reducing the risk of certain types of cancer, such as head and neck cancer, myeloid leukemia, and multiple myeloma, with percentages ranging between 14 and 26%.

Professor James Woodcock, one of the leads of the study, stated that moderate physical activities, such as walking or cycling, even for short periods, can yield significant health benefits, especially if it leads to an increased heart rate.

For their part, experts affirmed that these results serve as an important motivation for those hesitant to exercise, emphasizing that any amount of physical activity is better than none, and can be a first step towards a healthier lifestyle, with the possibility of gradually increasing the duration of exercise later on.
