Study A Vegetarian Diet Improves Sleep Quality in the Elderly

Khaberni - A study conducted by Chinese scientists showed that following a vegetarian diet improves the quality and duration of sleep among the elderly.
The researchers reached this conclusion after analyzing data from more than 9,000 participants in a national long-term study on health and longevity. Participants in the study were assigned a Sleep Quality Index Score (PHDI) based on their dietary components, and both sleep quality and duration were evaluated from the participants' perspectives after interviews conducted with them.

The analysis showed that elderly individuals who follow a vegetarian diet enjoy better sleep quality and longer periods of deep sleep compared to others. The results also indicated that every one-point increase in the nutritional quality index is associated with a 4-5% increase in the likelihood of enjoying good sleep, and this effect was more pronounced in individuals who combine a vegetarian diet with regular physical activity.
The researchers confirmed that the study is observational and does not prove a direct causal relationship, but its results suggest that sustainable dietary patterns based on plant-based foods not only benefit heart and metabolic health but also contribute to improved sleep quality.

Health experts indicate that plant-based foods such as legumes, vegetables, and fruits are rich sources of vitamins, minerals, and essential elements that enhance immunity, improve digestive system function, and overall health. Additionally, following vegetarian diets regularly is an effective means to prevent obesity, diabetes, heart, and cardiovascular diseases.
