Kylian Mbappé, the Real Madrid forward, achieved an unprecedented historic achievement in the UEFA Champions League, after scoring two goals against Portuguese Benfica on Wednesday evening during the last matchday of the league phase of the continental tournament.
Mbappé scored his first goal in the 30th minute of the match with a header following a precise cross from Raúl Asensio, putting the Spanish team in the lead, before adding the second in the 58th minute after a ground cross.
Mbappé's tally for the current season in the Champions League has reached 13 goals.
The goals came as follows: two against Marseille, three against Kairat Almaty, four against Olympiacos, two against Monaco, and two against Benfica.
According to the network "Opta", Mbappé became the first player to score 13 goals in the league phase (or group stage in the old system) of a single edition of the continental tournament in history.
The French star surpassed Cristiano Ronaldo, who scored 11 goals in the group stage of the 2015-2016 season.
Mbappé is now only 4 goals away from equaling Ronaldo's record as the top scorer in a single edition of the tournament (17 goals in the 2013-2014 edition).
