Khaberni - The city of Nishimi, situated on the hills of Sicily, is facing an escalating natural disaster, as landslides resulting from heavy rainfall have eroded vast areas of residential land.
Field reports indicate the sliding of houses, roads, and entire districts downward, putting hundreds of buildings at imminent risk of collapse, as described by Massimiliano Conti, the town's mayor, describing the scene as "dramatic" and confirming that the situation is worsening with continuous registration of fissures and further soil collapses.
Evacuation of thousands of residents and activation of emergency plans in Sicily
In a related context, the Italian Civil Protection Unit announced the evacuation of all residents within a four-kilometer radius from the landslide site, which extended for about 2.5 miles.
70 volunteers contributed to the relocation and securing of citizens, while emergency shelters and hundreds of households have been set up in the "Bio la Torre" sports hall in the city of Nishimi and away from the affected areas, with necessary equipment brought in from the city of Palermo.
Despite the severe material losses that left cars and buildings hanging on the edges of rock cliffs, the authorities have not yet registered any fatalities or human injuries, according to the "Daily Mail".
The economic repercussions of Hurricane Harry on the Italian island
These landslides followed the island's exposure to Hurricane "Harry," which caused extensive damage to infrastructure and coastal areas.
Renato Schifani, President of the Sicilian Region, estimated the value of the damages at approximately 740 million euros, while other estimates indicate that the total cost of the destruction reached about one billion euros.
Other cities like Catania and Gela experienced severe floods that shattered shopfronts and restaurants, turning streets into rivers of debris and water, leading to the suspension of studies in Nishimi to assess public safety in coordination with police and fire services.
