Damascus Retrieves Young Man Sentenced to Death in Iraq Over a Picture of AlShar

Khaberni  - Syrian young man Mohammed Anqa has arrived in his homeland from Iraq after the annulment of a death sentence that had been issued against him last October.

The 22-year-old Anqa was welcomed by his family members, and the Syrian Arab News Agency (SANA) stated that the young man arrived at Damascus International Airport from Iraq, after being acquitted of the charges against him, "thanks to the efforts made by the Syrian government and its ongoing follow-up of the case in coordination with the Iraqi government."

Relatives of the Syrian young man told the Syria Now platform earlier that the Najaf court had issued a death sentence by hanging until death for their son on October 27 last year, following his arrest at the beginning of the previous year for posting a video of President Ahmed Al-Shar' on his Facebook page.

The family added that authorities found a video on Mohammed's phone showing elements of the "Free Syrian Army" capturing a member of the Iraqi Al-Nujaba Movement.

According to human rights sources and testimonies from his relatives, the Syrian young man was subjected to severe torture and electric shocks during the investigation, forced to sign confessions without knowing their contents and without the presence of a lawyer, and then his case was referred to the court with "terrorism" charges based on the Anti-Terrorism Law No. 13 of 2005, leading to his death sentence.
