Trump We will not provide any support to Iraq if Nouri alMaliki returns to the premiership

Khaberni  - American President Donald Trump warned that the United States will stop supporting Iraq if former Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki returns to power.

Trump wrote on his Truth Social platform: "I hear that the great nation of Iraq might make a very bad choice by reinstating Nouri al-Maliki as Prime Minister".

He added, "Last time Maliki was in power, the country plunged into poverty and immense chaos. This must not happen again".

He continued, "Because of his policies and crazy ideologies, if elected, the United States will not provide any future assistance to Iraq".

Trump affirmed that Iraq, without the help of the United States, will have no chance of success.

On Saturday, the "Coordination Framework", which includes leaders of the winning Shiite parties in the Iraqi elections, announced former Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki as a candidate for the premiership.

The veteran politician, who is 75 years old, headed the government between 2006 and 2014, for two terms that included key moments in the country’s recent history.

The United States wields significant influence in Iraq, especially since the country’s oil export revenues are deposited in the Federal Reserve in New York under an arrangement reached after the 2003 American invasion.

Among the key demands of the United States is that Iraq limit the influence of Shiite militant factions backed by Iran. Current Prime Minister Mohammed Shia' al-Sudani, who took office in 2022, has gained the United States' trust through his efforts to curb these groups.

Yesterday, Tuesday, the Iraqi parliament postponed the session to elect a president at the request of the two main Kurdish parties, which asked for a deadline to agree on a candidate name, according to the official Iraqi news agency.

According to the power-sharing system in Iraq, a Shiite holds the position of prime minister, a Sunni presides over the parliament, while the presidency, which is largely a ceremonial position, is assigned to a Kurd.
