Prime Ministers of Denmark and Greenland Request Berlin and Paris Support Against Trump

Khaberni  - The Prime Ministers of Denmark Mette Frederiksen and Greenland Jens Frederik Nielsen said today, Tuesday, that they would be visiting Germany and France to rally support against the efforts of US President Donald Trump to acquire the island located in the Arctic region, which has been under Danish jurisdiction for centuries.

Official timetables showed that Frederiksen and Nielsen will meet with German Chancellor Friedrich Merz today, and French President Emmanuel Macron tomorrow, Wednesday.

The Danish Prime Minister's office stated that they will discuss "the current state of foreign policy and the need for a stronger Europe" during the meetings. The French Presidency announced that Macron will take the opportunity of the "working lunch" to "reaffirm European solidarity and France's support for Denmark and Greenland, their sovereignty, and territorial integrity," after Trump backed down from demanding control of the autonomous Danish island.

The three leaders will discuss "the security challenges in the Arctic Circle and the economic and social development of Greenland, which France and the European Union are ready to support," according to the Élysée Palace.

Trump recently backed down from claiming Greenland, after weeks of escalation and threats to forcibly take control of the Danish island and impose stringent customs duties on European countries opposing his plans, including France, Germany, and Britain.

These countries participated in a reconnaissance military mission in Greenland in mid-January.

Conversations between Trump and NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte in Davos on the sidelines of the World Economic Forum led to a "framework agreement" on Greenland, as announced by the American president without revealing details about it.

An Élysée Palace statement said "The three leaders will discuss the security challenges in the Arctic and the economic and social development of Greenland, which France and the European Union are prepared to support."

Frederiksen and Nielsen will also participate in the Velden Economic Summit in Germany.

Trump said last week that he had obtained, in agreement with NATO, full and permanent American access to Greenland, while the NATO Secretary-General stated that member countries need to enhance their commitment to Arctic security to counter threats from Russia and China.
