Khaled El Sawy Opens His Box of Secrets I Was a Failed Actor and Cabaret Got Me Expelled from School

Khaberni - Egyptian artist Khaled El Sawy admitted to the failure of several artistic projects he participated in, as they were not presented in a good artistic and production quality, referring to movies such as «El Fagoumy» and «Gamal Abdel Nasser», confirming that he sees no embarrassment in admitting the lack of success of those works because it's not a secret.

Failed Actor
He said during his participation in a seminar at the Cairo International Book Fair, "I was a failed actor at the beginning of my artistic career, and I did not achieve any notable success, although I participated in many theatrical works. I even suffered from a psychological crisis due to the repeated failures."

He added that this reached the extent of continuous crying alone in my room, wondering: «Why do I love acting when it does not love me back?». This failure continued until 2004 when I was forty years old, explaining that he tasted success for the first time through a theatrical show he presented at El-Hanager Theater in the Egyptian Opera House, which was named «Playing in the Brain».

He pointed out that he does not know the reasons for his failure during that period despite his great ambition and the effort he made to achieve success, continuing to say that what followed was significant success in cinema and television drama, which greatly pleased him.

The Story of «Cabaret»

El Sawy explained that he was a very failed student, due to his repeated failures in high school because he would select a few lessons to study and ignore the rest of the curriculum, noting that he can never forget being expelled from school in the fourth grade because of a short story he wrote named «Cabaret».

He added that I did not understand the meaning of that word then, but I was punished by expulsion. This made me try to find out its meaning by sneaking into one of the nearby cinemas and watching movies, and inquiring about the meaning of that word which he learned later on.

Lawyer and Director

Khaled El Sawy was born in Alexandria in 1963, obtained a Bachelor of Laws from Cairo University in 1985, then a Bachelor of Cinematic Directing from the Academy of Arts in 1993.

He worked as a lawyer for a short period, then as an assistant director, and later as a television director for Nile International Channel and other specialized Egyptian TV channels.

He started acting in university theater and participated in establishing the Egyptian Association for Theater Amateurs. He wrote and directed for theater, and won the Teimour Award for Creative Theater in 1991 and 1992 for his plays «The Madmen's Party» and «The Deravels Operetta», among his works as a director «The Madmen» and «The Deravels Operetta».

Khaled El Sawy gained great fame after participating in several drama and cinema productions, including the series «Solomon's Ring» and movies «Cabaret», «The Wedding», «The Island» and other important works.
