Khaberni - The sci-fi thriller "Mercy," starring Chris Pratt, achieved $11 million in revenue in its first weekend after its debut, according to expert estimates, ending the five-week reign of "Avatar: Fire and Ash" at the top of the North American box office rankings.
In this film, produced by "Amazon MGM Studios," Pratt plays a man who is tried for the murder of his wife and his fate lies in the hands of a judge working with artificial intelligence. Analyst David A. Gross from "Franchise Entertainment Research" noted that the severe winter storm affecting a large area of the United States led to a decrease in total weekend revenue.
Gross said that "Mercy's" initial showings were "a very good start given the harsh weather conditions that led to the closure of cinemas in two-thirds of the United States and people staying at home," and added: "Monday might reveal lower final numbers, after we see the effects of the cold and snow."
The estimates issued by "Exhibitor Relations" clarified that "Avatar: Fire and Ash," the third part of director James Cameron's massive film series, ranked second in the United States and Canada with revenues of seven million dollars this week, added to the cumulative total of its earnings.
This total thereby rose to 378.5 million dollars domestically, plus an additional billion dollars overseas, according to "Box Office Mojo." The third place was occupied by the animated film "Zootopia 2" from Disney, nominated for an Oscar, with revenues of 5.7 million dollars, surpassing the four hundred million dollar threshold in the United States and Canada.
Fourth place went to the movie "The Housemaid," produced by Lionsgate, with revenues reaching 4.9 million dollars. It is a film adapted from Frieda McFadden's best-selling novel and revolves around a young woman (Sydney Sweeney) who works for a wealthy couple (Amanda Seyfried and Brandon Sklenar) hiding dark secrets.
The fifth place was taken by "28 Years Later: The Bone Temple," the fourth part of the horror film series about the living dead, with revenues of 3.6 million dollars.
